Occasionally Cake, Alexandria, VA

21 07 2010

Occasionally Cake alexandria 30th birthday cake for a shopping and wine loving girlAfter driving to my dad’s house near Mt. Vernon a few months ago, something caught my eye… CAKE.  There was a storefront on Route 1 that I had not seen before: Occasionally Cake.  I frantically looked for spot to turn around and was excited about my new find.  Turns out they are about to celebrate their 1 year anniversary!

This is a small store with direct view of the kitchen and a few seats to sit and enjoy a cupcake….or two.  I met Sabrina Campbell, cake designer and owner, and we chatted a bit about their cakes and cupcakes.  Fortunately, I had a surprise 30th birthday party coming up for one of best friends and decided to give her a try.  Right then and there we sketched all of the elements of what I wanted and it was spot on and it is all edible.

They have what seems like an encyclopedia of their own original cake flavors (honestly, 6 plus pages) to choose from. I picked up some cupcakes to taste test and they were good.  Sabrina’s artistic work is great and that is what really makes the cake spectacular.  Her attention to detail was really incredible.

Also take a look at their wedding cakes and you can check out their gallery online.

Happy Cake Hunting!

Real Wedding: A Memorable Memorial Day Weekend Wedding (Part 2)

14 07 2010

As I had mentioned in Part 1 of this blog, Katie & Patrick tied the knot on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in late May at the River Farm in Alexandria.  As promised, here are the details that newlyweds worked so hard for us to coordinate!

Venue: River Farm Alexandria, VA, Janet.  This venue has become extremely popular and there is no wonder why.  They provide an amazing backdrop for the entire event; ceremony and reception.

Photographer: Ralph Alswang. Ralph is efficient and captures the moment fast!  I also need to mention he is fun and makes everyone laugh.  Great to work with!  Check out the slideshow of pictures by clicking here.

Floral Designer: Petals Edge. Provided beautiful personal flowers, reception flowers and cake flowers.

Caterer: Main Event Caterers, Michelle Fishman.  As always, the catering team and food was great.

Band: Doug Segree.  This was the first time I have heard them and they are now one of my favorites!  They had the guests dancing the entire time!

Transportation: Black Ice Transportation (Reggie Banks) Provided excellent sedan service for Katie and Patrick.  He was always early to the pick up and drop off points and would definitely use him again.  Dash Bus. At first I was worried about the reliability of using the public transportation buses but the service was excellent, the drop off and pick up worked seamlessly.

Hair: Hair by Jewels

Makeup: Jan Scott Makeup Artist

Accommodations: Lorien Hotel & Spa Alexandria, VA  They were extremely helpful and accommodating to all of the wedding party and guests.

Cake: Fluffy Thoughts The cake was amazing and they also made the colorful and tasty French macaroons to accompany the wedding cake.

Spotted: Wedding Details

12 07 2010

Some of our favorite details from our happy couple were featured!

1) Check our this Weddings Unveiled blog post about Holly Chapple, one of our favorite floral designers. She designed Allison and Kevin‘s flowers for their wedding last year. Holly created bright and cheerful arrangements in yellow (see the first 3 and last photos). Don’t remember? Go back and check out their happy day at Whitehall Manor captured by Genevieve Leiper.

2) Megan shared with you Katie and Patrick’s wedding recently. See their customized monogram coasters on District Weddings, photographed by Ralph Alswang.

Real Wedding: Art Deco Chic for Sports Fans (Part 2)

7 07 2010

Go back to Part 1.

Venue: Clarendon Ballroom. Sandra Hoehne. We looked at several venues in DC but finally Kara and Andrew came and saw the Clarendon Ballroom when we were setting up for Gwen and Adam’s wedding, and knew it was the place for them.

Officiant: Phyllis Anne Duncan, Northern Virginia Ethical Society.

Photographer: Angela Gaeto Photography. The bride’s aunt, a professional photographer in Albuquerque.

Floral Designer: Philippa Tarrant. When we decided on the black, white and blue color scheme, and knowing that Kara liked white, low texture flowers, Philippa was the perfect fit.

Music: MyDeejay.com. Evan Reitmeyer. Love Evan. Love the way he treats his clients. Love the way he subscribes to the same work ethic I do. I had a great time working with Evan.

Clarendon Ballroom wedding dancing

Come on! You know the music is good when even Grandma, who is in a wheelchair, is boogeying down on the dance floor.

Photobooth: Party Booths.  Everybody had a blast with the photo booth. We used them before at Soumya and Tejus’ wedding a few years back. One note of caution – I thought the attendants were inappropriately dressed. They wore long sleeve polos shirts and baggy pants, inappropriate for a wedding where guests were in semi-formal attire. If you rent from them, please specify the attendant dress code.

Rentals: DC Rental

Bride Makeup: Leah McKay.

Hair and Makeup: Bridal Artistry. Barbara and Ky. Love working with Barbara and her team. We added and subtracted people several times and they were very flexible.

Rehearsal Dinner: Boulevard Woodgrill. If you don’t know, Boulevard Woodgrill has a private dining space in the lower level of the restaurant that can easily fit 60 people with its own bar.

Guest Hotel & Farewell Breakfast: Westin Arlington Gateway and Pizimini Restaurant. The Westin is an ideal location for anyone hosting a wedding in the Ballston/Clarendon area. The restaurant has a private dining space in the rear where our group had a farewell continent breakfast.

So proud of how this escort card display came out! The graphic artist that designed the cards made them look like ticket stubs. You can barely see in the background that the display also included lucite boxes of baseballs balls and candles surrounded by golf tees. Photo: Angela Gaeto
